University of Iowa Honored with DOE Award for FDD

October 15, 2018

Congratulations are due to the team at the University of Iowa for their national recognition from the U.S. Department of Energy in the current Smart Energy Analytics campaign for Best Practice in the use of fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) at their Iowa City campus. See more below:

At KGS Buildings, we’ve long been advocates of the work the DOE is doing, as well as the initiatives that national labs like LBNL, PNNL, NREL, and ORNL are developing to bring building energy technologies into the mainstream. The DOE’s Smart Analytics campaign is an excellent example of the initiatives we are eager to promote.

As a supporting partner of this program, our mission is to help further the message that EMIS and FDD are powerful, proven technologies driving today’s building energy initiatives forward, resulting in highly successful and measurable benefits. And this is certainly one reason to be proud of the award being given to the University of Iowa. The University of Iowa’s facilities team has complex and unique building systems across campus, so they wanted a flexible FDD solution that would scale. They also wanted to focus their in-house resources on what they do best: maintenance, engineering, and troubleshooting of their mechanical systems without the need for complicated and expensive programming. Through use of the KGS Buildings Clockworks FDD solution (through our partnership with Schneider Electric and Control Installations of Iowa, the University has moved from reactive to planned and predictive facility operations with impressive results in energy savings.

UofI Case Study

There will be a panel discussion on “Using Analytics for Successful MBCx” at the upcoming BCxA Conference in Nashville on Oct. 16th with Hannah Kramer (LBNL), Katie Rossman and Tom Moore (University of Iowa) as well as representatives from Nexant and ComEd.

If you are visiting BCxA, be sure to let us know and set up a time to meet. Even if you can’t make it, the Smart Energy Analytics Campaign has an excellent case study on the University of Iowa’s award winning FDD approach that is worth checking out!

More news and awards coming up soon!

Sincerely,

The KGS Buildings Team
